The World Scout Jamboree
A World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) is a gathering of Scouts and Guides from all over the world for an exciting programme of global development, peace, cultural understanding, adventure, friendship and fun.
This opportunity of a lifetime includes not only the Jamboree itself but also a short stay in Tokyo and a Home Hospitality (HoHo) experience where you will stay at a host’s home and experience how families in Japan or another local country live and socialise.
This experience will give you:
A whole new outlook on your Scouting life and the world in general
An opportunity to explore a country very different to the UK
The chance to mix with individuals from all over the world
The Scout Association has a long history of sending groups of Scouts and Guides, known as a Contingent, to attend World Scout Jamborees. In 2007 The Scout Association hosted the 21st WSJ at Hylands Park, Chelmsford and in 2011 the UK Contingent to the 22nd WSJ in Sweden was the Association’s largest ever overseas expedition at more than 4,000 people.
The UK Contingent will be no bigger than 10% of the total Jamboree to ensure that there is a good mixture of countries represented. This means the maximum size of the UK Contingent to Japan is 3,000 people.
This number will be made up of:
In addition to the members of the Contingent, 500 adults from UK Scouting and Guiding will join the Jamboree Planning Team (JPT).
The Warwickshire and Coventry Unit will be made up of three patrols (3 leaders and 27 participants) from Warwickshire and one patrol (1 leader and 9 participants) from Coventry.
We are looking for people who will welcome this experience, but who will also be prepared to put in the hard work it takes to get the most out of the Jamboree experience. This includes fund raising, events, training weekends and meetings. We will be representing Scouting in the whole of the United Kingdom at the Jamboree and, as such, being a Jamboree participant comes with a great deal of responsibility.
If you choose to apply to be a part of this amazing experience, you will spend your time in a city of tents filled with people from all over the world with whom you share one fundamental interest. You will learn about other cultures and will experience things that you cannot imagine through the unity of peace and common understanding of the promise and law which all Scouts share.
Applicants must:
This application form is your opportunity to shine: it’s the first thing the Unit Leaders will look at when we come to deciding who will be put forward to the selection weekend. We want to hear about the real you. We expect competition to be fierce as we believe Warwickshire and Coventry have some of the most dedicated and passionate youth members in Scouting.
The selection of Youth Participants for the Warwickshire and Coventry Unit to the World Jamboree is an important process. Unfortunately not all of those who apply will make it as we only have 36 places within the Unit. Successful applicants in the first stage of the process will be invited to attend a selection weekend in November.
The deadline for applications is Sunday 13th October and the selection weekend will be 29th November – 1st December 2013 at Rough Close. If you are unable to attend the selection weekend regretfully we will be unable to accept your application.
The selection weekend will be your opportunity to show us your skills, personality, dedication and commitment. It will also give you the chance to get to know some of the people you will be travelling with if you are successful. The weekend will also give you the tools to make an informed decision as to whether or not this is the trip for you.
The cost of the Jamboree is to be no more than £3,045.00. This fee will cover all transport from a local airport, food, accommodation, insurance, provision of basic kit and training events/camps. As a participant you will be expected to fund raise your way to the Jamboree. Please do not let the cost put you off: there will be plenty of opportunities to fundraise with other members of the Unit to reduce the personal cost. There will be a payment schedule in place to spread the cost of the Jamboree between 2013 and 2015. The first payment is likely to be between £300 and £500 before Christmas 2013.
If you would like to have an informal chat about any of the information provided in this document please contact us at wsj.unit42@gmail.com or come to one of our road shows.
The Jamboree will give successful applicants the chance to take their Scouting adventure to a whole new inspirational level. Please read the information we have provided and look carefully at the criteria we are looking for to ensure that you have covered the important things in the application form.
Good luck, and we look forward to receiving your application.
Please note:
The Jamboree is physically and emotionally demanding. Applicants should be aware of what is expected and be confident that they are able to contribute to all aspects of the Jamboree experience.
Applicants should be aware that the Jamboree experience may last up to three weeks subject to final confirmation from Japan and therefore will need to be sure they have the support of employers and family to be able to commit to the event. Furthermore, there will be a significant number of weekend and evening commitments in preparation and applicants should be confident they have time available amongst other commitments to fulfil the obligations of the role.
